Downloading

Revised procedure: October 10, 1998 .....

You may download these files to your own computer as follows:

1. Make a directory on your hard drive, perhaps called CHEM351.
2. Find your way back to this page.
3. Select the entry you want to download with the LEFT mouse button.
4. A dialog box will appear. Click on the "Save File" button.
5. A new dialog box will appear asking where to save the file.
6. Either enter the location of your CHEM351 directory by hand
on the top "Save in:" line, or find it using the browse function.
7. Click the OK button and the file will be transfered to your hard drive.

Once the file is saved, you can exit Netscape and start Powerpoint to open the saved file.

If it doesn't work, check this.

If the save function does not work check the following.

1. Open NetScape.
2. Select "Options" then "General Preferences" and then "Helpers" from the menus.
3. Scroll through the table of helpers. There should be an entry:
"application/vnd.ms-powerpoint Save ppt".
4. If not, click on "Create New" and fill in the dialog box with "application" (line 1)
and "vnd.ms-powerpoint" (line 2).
5. Press OK. Enter "ppt" where it asks for extensions.
6. Click on "save to disk" and then click "OK". Quit NetScape.
7. When you restart NetScape, these changes will take effect, and you should be able to save files.

Viewing with PowerPoint

If you have PowerPoint95 you can install it to view these files directly (while you are in NetScape) without downloading them to disk.

1. Follow the procedure given in the paragraph above until you are asked to click on "save to disk."
2. Instead, click on "launch application" and use browse to find Powerpoint.exe.
3. When Powerpoint.exe's location is entered in the window (for example, C:\MSOFFICE\POWERPNT\powerpoint.exe), click "OK".
4. Quit and restart NetScape.
5. Now when you right click files PowerPoint will display them.

Viewing with PowerPoint Viewer

Download viewer for Win95 PowerPoint

The latest Windows97 PowerPoint Viewer is available from Microsoft:

..... or use this one : PPView97.exe for Windows97.

If you install the viewer as a MIME helper in either Netscape or Explorer, you will be able to view these files without downloading them. Once you download this file, you should open Windows Explorer and then find and double-click on the file entry. The viewer is self-installing and this will cause it to install itself.

Once the viewer has been installed on your hard drive you must also install it in Netscape.

1. Open NetScape.
2. Select "Options" then "General Preferences" and then "Helpers" from the menus.
3. Scroll through the table of helpers. There should be an entry:
"application/vnd.ms-powerpoint PPView32 ppt".
4. If not, click on "Create New" and fill in the dialog box with "application" (line 1)
and "vnd.ms-powerpoint" (line 2).
5. Press OK. Enter "ppt" where it asks for extensions.
6. Click on "launch the application" and use "Browse" to enter the location of the viewer program (C:\Program Files\PowerPoint Viewer\PPView32.exe).
7. Finally click "OK" and quit NetScape.
8. When you restart NetScape, these changes will take effect, and you should be able to view the PowerPoint files when you click on them.
